Grandma Reiss Horseshoes
(AKA German Sour Cream Twists)
- 3 c. sifted flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 c. shortening (1/2 butter)
- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- c. warm water
- c. thick sour cream
- 1 whole egg + 2 egg yolks, well-beaten
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. sugar, divided
Sift flour and salt together.
Cut in shortening/butter.
Dissolve yeast in water.
Stir into flour mixture with sour cream, eggs, vanilla, and cup sugar; mix well by hand.
Cover with damp cloth and refrigerate for 2 hours.
Work with of the dough.
Roll out to approximately inch thickness.
Cut into 3-inch strips, twisting each slightly.
Dip into remaining cup sugar to coat.
Place on cookie sheet in a “U” shape (horseshoe).
Bake at 375 for 15 minutes.
Repeat with other half of dough.
Makes approximately 3 dozen.
